It’s National Pet Memorial Day in a few days time here in the UK (Sunday 12th September 2021), a day set aside to remember our precious pets who have sadly crossed the rainbow bridge. Our pets mean the world to us and the day we have to say goodbye is absolutely devastating. The heart break of losing a pet can be too much to bear at times. The emptiness you feel inside, the silence and emptiness in your home, now that your best friend is no longer by your side.
We often spend a great many years with our pets, forming a deep and very meaningful bond with them, making the loss even harder to cope with. There are many ways you can honour and remember your pets. Here I share 7 ways you can remember your pets and keep them close ranging from pet memorial gardens to silver paw print jewellery and pet portraits.
A popular way to remember your pet is to plant some nice flowers and plants in an area of your garden, perhaps your dog or cat’s favourite spot and create a little remembrance garden. A beautiful area filled with colour that you can visit often and reflect on the wonderful memories you created with your furbaby. You could even add a little water feature to add some tranquillity.
Once you have decided on a spot for your memorial garden sketch it out on some paper and plan what you will include e.g. which flowers and plants, a water feature or perhaps a garden figure of a cat or dog. You could arrange some stones or pebbles in the shapes of little paw prints, the possibilities are endless really. A chance to create a special place where you and your pet can connect and feel close.
I know from personal experience and from having spoken to a lot of pet owners who have lost their precious cats, dogs, and small furries that having their furbaby’s paw print in silver jewellery, to keep and carry with them wherever they go is a huge comfort. Many pet parents want a pet memorial, but don’t really know where to start. Silver paw print jewellery offers a unique way of keeping your pet with you wherever you go.
Pet owners often hold and fiddle with their paw print jewellery, running their fingers over the paw print area and this really helps them feel closer and more connected with their pet. Silver paw print jewellery can be created at any age, many pet owners capture their pet’s unique paw print when they are young and I actively encourage this.
By capturing your pet’s paw print early on, you are then wearing your paw print jewellery whilst with your pet creating so many wonderful memories. Those memories become locked inside that jewellery forever and are still there after you have had to say goodbye, providing you with an amazing and emotional pet memorial.
Another popular option to remember your pet is to capture their unique paw print and have it tattooed onto your skin as a permanent reminder of your precious pet. Most if not all tattoo artists would be happy to tattoo your pet’s paw print for you and add their name or a special message. Several of our customers have ordered an inkless paw print kit to capture their pet’s paw prints. Any extra furry bits are tidied up and then you are sent a clearer paw print image, which is ready for the tattoo. If you prefer to keep the furry bits you can have those tattooed as well, it’s personal preference. You will have original and tidied up paw prints to choose from.
Many pet owners like to have a pet portrait painted of their beloved pet after they have passed away as a beautiful keepsake and pet memorial, that is displayed in pride of place in their home. There are many very talented artists out there but one I would recommend having seen a lot of her work is Nicky Chadwick who creates the most stunning pet portraits with coloured pencils. Nicky is exceptionally skilled and creates her beautiful artwork in various sizes so there is something for everyone. Check out her work here.
Cheeky Little Prints create silver jewellery encasing a little of your pet’s fur or cremation ashes in resin. Truly beautiful keepsakes that last a lifetime. There are a range of jewellery designs to choose from including charm beads, pendants, earrings and cufflinks and the collection of designs offered will expand over time. When you lose a treasured pet you often want to hang onto their belongings, their food bowl, collar, blanket and favourite toys but you are not really sure what to do with them. How about taking a few items like collar and favourite toy and mount them in a nice box frame that you can hang in your house as a keepsake and reminder of your furbaby.
You can pick up a box frame quite easily from the high street or online. Why not make a little name plaque to mount inside or on the outside with your pet’s name and any other special messages or dates you might like to add. You can even paint the wooden frame part to match your home decor.
