With pet ownership seeing a steep rise, particularly over the last 15 months or so, many potential pet owners are not sure whether to buy from a breeder or adopt a dog. There are many fors and againsts for both and a lot will depend on your lifestyle, living arrangements and previous dog owning experience.
Some potential dog owners worry that they don’t know what they are taking on if they adopt a rescue dog, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth really. Yes dogs in rescue centres do have a past, often they have been mistreated, very badly in some cases. Some dogs may be reluctant to trust humans for a while due to the mistreatment. However, when you adopt a dog you will know their history, what they have been through, what their personality is, if they have any behavioural issues and if so what they are. All dogs in rescue centres are thoroughly assessed by behavioural experts so they can give you lots of information on the dogs, their likes and dislikes, the type of care they need. You will also know if the dog is happy to live with children and if so what age children, these things all make a huge difference to how well they fit into your family.
When you adopt a dog from a rescue shelter, you can rest assured knowing they have been thoroughly examined by veterinary professionals to ensure they are fit and healthy or if they do have any medical needs they are taken care of as soon as possible. A dog could have a heart condition, they still deserve a loving home but it’s important their new owner is aware of their condition and has the necessary knowledge and medication so they can look after them properly.
Some rescue dogs have had a very tough start to life and all they want is a warm home and a loving owner. When you adopt a dog, you can give them all those wonderful things and more and it literally will change their life for the better. Rescuing a dog will also change your life for the better too. Dogs bring us so much joy and are so good for our mental health as well. Dogs give us a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. Not to mention the fantastic benefits of dog walking on our physical health and also your dog’s health. Reducing the risk of heart disease and joint disease as well as all the mental health benefits.
Another benefit you get when you adopt a dog is the ongoing support you get from the adoption centre. Adopting a dog is a huge commitment and you are likely to have lots of questions before and after you have welcomed your new dog into your home. Adoption centre staff are very experienced and can offer help with a huge range of things from behaviour, settling into a new home, health checks, how to give medication, training and overcoming settling in issues. This ongoing support really is invaluable in helping you and your new dog get off to the best start and continue making great progress together along your new journey.
When you visit an adoption centre and register your interest you will be asked lots of questions about where you live, your job and family commitments as well as your lifestyle. All of this information is very important for understanding what breed of dog is best suited to living with you. How much time do you have for exercising a dog, do you work away from home for long periods of time, can you afford the type of food a particular dog needs? Do you have children and if so how old are they? Do you have other pets and if so what do you have? It is critically important that you adopt the right dog for your family and that the dog you choose will be happy living with you.
